McKinley at the Carr House

McKinley addresses the crowd

The Carr House today
The Carr House stands as one of the most historic buildings in Galesburg. In the year 1898, President McKinley hosted the only Cabinet Meeting held outside the White House in this home while McKinley and other government leaders were in Galesburg to attend the 40th anniversary of the Lincoln-Douglas Debate, which took place at nearby Knox College in 1858.
The Carr House was built 1894 by Col. Clark E. Carr, one of the most distinguished men in Galesburg's history. Previous to living in Galesburg, Carr had been a U.S. Minister in Denmark. Carr was a personal friend of several of the nation's presidents, many of whom made social calls as well as overnight visits at the home.
Carr was also acquainted with President Abraham Lincoln, and was instrumental in involving him in the infamous Lincoln-Douglas debates. In fact, during the debate, Carr sat onstage in support of his old friend.
We have worked diligently to retain the many distinct features of the Carr House, as well as making it comfortable for modern-day sensibilities. We look forward to having you stay with us! Please call (309) 343-3444 to reserve a stay at the Carr House
